Heart to Heart

Jay felt his cheeks burn. Was it because he’d been staring? He tried to tear his gaze away, but she was too close, filling his vision with soft skin, hard muscles, and enticing curves.

“Sure,” he said, finding his voice and gazing up into her two-toned eyes. “What about?”

Lyra wrapped the towel over her shoulders, to keep her damp hair off her back, and then knelt before him. She bit her lip as if wondering how to start. Finally, she said, “I’m attracted to you. And I think you feel the same way.”

Jay nodded wordlessly, her position at his feet making it very hard for him to think of anything beyond the obvious. He managed to get out a breathy, “Yes.”

“I’d like to pursue those feelings,” she said, and Jay felt his heart lurch to a stop before starting up, hammering harder than ever before. “But—”

That word ground his excitement to a halt, and he sat forward, already wanting to protest. But he knew he needed to hear what she had to say before begging her to reconsider. It was only polite. “But what?”

“But I think you need to address the feelings you have for your… friend. For Molly… first.”

Jay’s chest tightened at her words. “I know what it seems like,” he said. “But there’s really nothing between us. There could have been if she’d wanted it, but she doesn’t. I can’t wait for her to change her mind forever, Lyra.”

It was the fox-girl’s turn to sigh. She pressed her lips together and glanced up at the ceiling. Jay traced the slender line of her neck down to the hollow between her breasts. The towel covered her just enough to make him want to tear it away, but he was still frozen in place. He didn’t want to scare her away. And her concerns were valid.

“Jay… I just… I don’t see how that can be true. I don’t see how she can’t have feelings for you. Have you two ever talked about it? Or are you just assuming you know what’s in her heart? Because I will be the first to tell you a girl isn’t always obvious about what she feels, especially if she’s worried about getting hurt. I… I lost someone, once. Someone I cared very much about, but who I never expressed my feelings for. That’s why I’m telling you how I feel now. I’m scared of getting hurt again, too. But nothing hurts worse than losing the chance to have something more. So…”

Jay swallowed, not knowing what to say. The fact of the matter was, he and Molly hadn’t ever talked about what had happened between them. She’d pulled away and he’d assumed it was because she didn’t want that kind of relationship with him. And when she’d seemed more interested later on, he’d waited for her to tell him she was ready. She hadn’t, and again he’d assumed that was because she didn’t want him that way. Molly was his best friend. He knew her better than he knew anyone.
